MoistureProblem
Unchecked moisture can lead to structural damage, poor air quality, and expensive repairs.

- Musty odors in your home
- Wet or damp crawl space surfaces
- Condensation on pipes or ductwork
- Wood rot or rusty metal components
Moisture Doesn’t Stay Below.
It Rises. It Spreads. It Damages.
Why It Matters
Crawl Space Humidity Can Affect Your Whole Home
Moisture below your home rarely stays below your home. As humidity rises in an unsealed or poorly ventilated crawl space, it can feed mold and mildew, create persistent musty odors, and degrade indoor air quality on the floors above.
Over time, that same moisture can saturate insulation so it sags and loses its R-value, force your HVAC system to work harder against damp air, and contribute to wood rot and long-term structural issues in framing and subflooring. Controlling crawl space humidity at the source is one of the most effective ways to protect the whole home — and a dedicated, crawl-space-rated dehumidifier is built to do exactly that.
- Poor Air Quality Moist, stale air rises into your living space.
- Musty Odors Persistent odors spread throughout your home.
- Wood Rot & Damage Excess moisture weakens wood, leading to rot and costly repairs.
- Wet Insulation Saturated insulation sags, losing R-value and increasing energy bills.
- High Humidity Moisture builds up in the crawl space from soil, leaks, and poor ventilation.
The Hidden Impact of Crawl Space Moisture
-
Mold Growth Encourages mold, mildew, and bacteria.
-
Poor Health Can trigger allergies, asthma, and respiratory issues.
-
Higher Bills Makes your HVAC work harder and increases energy costs.
-
Structural Risk Leads to wood rot, corrosion, and costly repairs.
-
Lower Home Value Moisture problems can reduce comfort and property value.

Crawl Space Dehumidifier FAQs
Answers to common questions about crawl space humidity, sizing, coverage, drainage, and the AprilAire E100.
What humidity should a home or crawl space be?
For most homes, crawl spaces, and basements, the goal is to keep relative humidity around 50% to 60%. When humidity stays above that range for long periods, the risk of mold, mildew, musty odors, wood rot, and insulation damage increases. A whole-house dehumidifier like the AprilAire E100 helps control humidity at the source instead of only treating the air in one room.
What size area can the AprilAire E100 cover?
The AprilAire E100 is a whole-house unit rated for up to approximately 5,500 sq ft, depending on climate, home tightness, and moisture load (roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft in hot-humid Region C, up to 4,000–5,500 sq ft in drier Region A). Its 100-pints-per-day capacity makes it a strong fit for whole homes, large basements, and encapsulated crawl spaces needing serious, continuous moisture control.
How much moisture does the E100 remove?
The AprilAire E100 removes up to 100 pints of moisture per day at 80°F and 60% RH (about 85 pints per day at 73°F and 60% RH). It samples the air and runs only when dehumidification is needed, and an optional air-cycling mode can run the fan to help equalize humidity and temperature throughout the space.
Can the AprilAire E100 be ducted into my HVAC or run stand-alone?
Both. The E100 has 10" inlet and outlet duct connections with a backdraft damper, so it can be ducted into your HVAC returns and supply for whole-house coverage, or set up as a stand-alone unit for a large basement or encapsulated crawl space. It is ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certified for low-cost operation.
Can this dehumidifier run continuously and where does the water drain?
Yes. The E100 is built for continuous drainage and long-term operation. It includes a 10 ft drain tube and a 3/4" threaded (MNPT) drain connection, and a patented backflow drain insert means no P-trap is required. Water can drain to a sump basin, condensate pump, floor drain, or approved drainage point so it flows away reliably.
Does the E100 improve air quality and help with mold and odors?
The E100 uses a washable MERV 8 filter (upgradeable to MERV 11) that helps capture dust and airborne particles, and by lowering humidity it helps make the space less favorable for future mold, mildew, and musty-odor problems. A dehumidifier does not remove existing mold by itself — any existing mold or water intrusion should be addressed separately.
Is the E100 quiet and how is it powered?
The AprilAire E100 operates at about 55 dBA when ducted and draws less than 3 watts in idle mode. It plugs into a standard 120 VAC outlet using its 8 ft power cord (6.7 amps in operation), so no special electrical hookup is required for most installations.
Is this better than a portable dehumidifier?
For a whole home, large basement, or crawl space, yes. A standard portable dehumidifier is designed for occasional single-room use, not long-term whole-house moisture control. The E100 is built for these environments, with 100 pints/day capacity, 280 CFM airflow, continuous drainage, corrosion-resistant aluminum coils, a sealed R32 refrigeration system, and washable MERV 8 filtration.
